Después de haber vivido en sitios diferentes, siendo Helsinki el último, ¿cómo se siente al llegar a una ciudad como Coruña?
¡Coruña es una ciudad en el medio de una fuerte naturaleza y del océano! Estoy acostumbrado a tratar y estar cerca de la naturaleza – aunque de una diferente. La naturaleza nórdica nos estimula de forma diferente. Así que, está muy bien experimentar un tipo de medioambiente diferente. El paisaje no es siempre muy inspirador, pero creo que es la gente, quien crea la atmósfera en una ciudad – no los edificios. La impresión que tengo, es que la gente en Coruña son muy abiertos y con los pies en la tierra“.
After having lived in different places, being Helsinki the latest one, how does it feel to arrive in a city like A Coruña?
A Coruna is a city in the middle of the strong nature and ocean! I am used to dealing and being close to nature- a different one though. Nordic nature challenges us differently. So, it feels very good to experience a different kind of environment. The architecture is not always very inspiring, but I believe, it is people, who create an atmosphere in a city – not buildings. The impression I got is, that people in A Coruna are very open and “down to earth”.
¿Cuáles fueron las principales razones que hicieron que aceptaras ser el nuevo director de la OSG?
Ellos eran artistas – conocí una orquesta, que reaccionó ante mi música de una forma muy sensible y relajada. A parte de esto, la química entre la orquesta y yo funcionó muy bien ¡y el resultado final fue maravilloso!
Which were the main reasons that made you accept to become the OSG’s new conductor?
They were artistic – I met an orchestra, which reacted to my music making in a very sensitive and flexible way. Besides this fact – the working chemistry between the orchestra and myself functioned very well and the final result was wonderful!
Con tu amplia experiencia internacional ¿qué piensas sobre la situación de la música en Galicia y España? ¿Cómo le afecta la crisis actual?
A pesar de la crisis, parece que la gente se ha dado cuenta de que la música es la fuerza, la que los ayudará a afrontar los tiempos difíciles. Me parece, que este desacuerdo nos ha envuelto a ambos, al público y a los políticos. El resultado es, que tenemos una orquesta, una joven orquesta, una orquesta infantil, un coro y un joven coro aún juntos a pesar de la situación financiera tan difícil. ¡Algo para estar orgulloso! No puedo pensar en otro lugar que pudiera albergar tanta variedad de organizaciones culturales.
By your extensive international experience: what do you think about the situation of music in Galicia and Spain? how is it affected by the current crisis?
Despite the crisis, it seems that people have realized that music is the force, which will help them to get through the difficult times. It seems to me, that this understanding has involved both, the public, and the political layers. The outcome is, that we have an Orchestra,Youth orchestra,children’s orchestra, Choir, and Youth choir still together despite the very difficult financial situation. Something to be very proud of! I can not think of any other place, which would have such a variety of cultural institutions.
La OSG ha ganado gran reputación tanto en casa como en el extranjero durante muchos años, ¿cuáles son tus metas y retos para los próximos tres años?
Las metas son: desarrollar la orquesta ampliando el repertorio y también mantener las cualidades adquiridas, como producir un sonido relajado y profundo y el buen trabajo en equipo. Una de las metas es asegurarse de que nuestra orquesta se da a conocer y que es reconocida tanto en el extranjero como en España.
The OSG has earned a good reputation at home and abroad for years; which are your goals and challenges for the next three seasons?
The goals are: developing the orchestra by broadening the repertoire as well as keeping up and maintaining already achieved qualities like very flexible and deep sound producing and good team work. One of the other goals is make sure our orchestra is noticed and appreciated abroad as well as elsewhere in Spain.
